What it is

Widened veins draining the testicle, common and usually harmless; sometimes linked to ache, growth or fertility.

The operation

Treated only for clear reasons: persistent pain, a teenager's testicle falling behind in growth, or infertility with abnormal semen. His repair is laparoscopic.

Anesthesia & stay

General anaesthesia; day case in most cases.

Recovery

Desk work within days; no heavy lifting for about 2 weeks; semen rechecked at about 3 months if fertility was the reason.

Home care

Supportive underwear and simple painkillers settle mild discomfort; most varicoceles need no treatment at all.

Warning signs

Sudden severe testicular pain is always an emergency — a twisted testicle must be excluded within hours.
